Training for Molokai
Josh and I have always had the idea that training for the channel should be fun. Training for such a big athletic event is very physically taxing. Not only that, but is is also challenging to manage scheduling training times in with your daily work schedule. For the two of us, trying to coordinate times to go paddle has been difficult. But we've never forgotten our number one goal; to have fun.
We started paddling about 4 months before the race. Our goal was to paddle at least two times a week. We also wanted to do a couple or a few of the local short distance races in order to understand the race atmosphere. With those goals in mind, however, we made it a point to surf when there was surf, go out and have fun late at night, and not change our daily lives dramatically in order to accommodate our new hobby. I would say that has been critical in enabling our success this first season while we try to understand what paddleboarding is all about.
The Cline Mann, put on by the Outrigger Canoe Club, is one race that we both got to do together. Josh and I paddled the sprint circuit from Hawaii Kai to the OCC. It was a great race and helped us get more motivated for the channel.
Keep reading later to see a video compiled by Chris Aguilar and Morgan Hoestery highlighting clips from our training group led by Mike Cote.
