A disappearing nation: The struggle of the Maldives

The Island President

President Mohamed Nasheed, who resigned his presidency of the Maldives under duress in February, just over one month ago, is an example for the entire world. He is the star of the award winning documentary, The Island President.

This documentary tells the story of his struggle as a new president to fight his nation’s greatest threat: climate change. This film recounts his fight for global awareness of the imminence of climate change at the Copenhagen summit of 2009. The wonderful images, the juxtaposition of nature with concrete is a stark reminder that globalization has taken a toll on our world. Just when you think that buying a reusable grocery bag and bringing your coffee mug to Startbucks was enough to fight climate change, you will be reminded how wrong you are. It’s time to start thinking critically. The ones who can make the biggest changes are you and I. By researching our politicians and getting informed about what the reality of the situation is and what it is that they are supporting, it can help guide us through upcoming elections.

Get with it! And save our oceans.
