The recent loss of pioneer surfer, Philip Hoffman, was announced in the New York times a short time ago. One quote from the article sums up the mentality of a surfer, in the water and out:
“He appeared not to have fear,” Mr. Muñoz added. “He wasn’t an exceptional athlete. He just had exceptional confidence in his skills.”
I have never spoken to Hoffman or even know a lot about him, however, I could probably guess that his confidence was not confused at all with cockiness.
Thanks to people like Hoffman, surfers everywhere are able to share the joy and beauty of the magnificent North Shore.
Surf on.
