Our world: Ruled by politics

Jumping to conclusions is dangerous. Like the fact that a pipeline from Canada to Texas would lower gas prices. This bill is so preliminary that it doesn’t even have a proposed route yet. There is no concrete documentation saying that this Keystone Pipeline will, in fact, lower gas prices. Concluding that this bill is a good idea would be like reading the headline “Senate Blocks Bid To Speed Pipeline From Canada” and thinking that this pipeline is the same as our North Shore iconic surf spot: ridiculous and ill informed.

Just like usual, it all comes down to money. This is a Canada vs. America, Republicans vs. Democrats, and Environmentalists vs. Politicians fight. One common thread between the three battles is $$$$. There is no need to convert gallons to liters or Euros to dollars, just trust me: gas here is cheap compared to most nations around the world. It’s time for American’s to stop looking in their wallets and to start gazing at the world around them. Get your head out of your checkbook, go look at the beautiful and natural wave, pipeline, and think of long-term investments you can make in this beautiful nature. It will keep giving back to you. Nature is an investment. Just ask the many local farmers on this island, on others and around the world.

It becomes evident that politics and economy are struggling with human rights and ecological activists. When money gets involved, things get complicated. I urge you to get informed.

A disappearing nation: The struggle of the Maldives

The Island President

President Mohamed Nasheed, who resigned his presidency of the Maldives under duress in February, just over one month ago, is an example for the entire world. He is the star of the award winning documentary, The Island President.

This documentary tells the story of his struggle as a new president to fight his nation’s greatest threat: climate change. This film recounts his fight for global awareness of the imminence of climate change at the Copenhagen summit of 2009. The wonderful images, the juxtaposition of nature with concrete is a stark reminder that globalization has taken a toll on our world. Just when you think that buying a reusable grocery bag and bringing your coffee mug to Startbucks was enough to fight climate change, you will be reminded how wrong you are. It’s time to start thinking critically. The ones who can make the biggest changes are you and I. By researching our politicians and getting informed about what the reality of the situation is and what it is that they are supporting, it can help guide us through upcoming elections.

Get with it! And save our oceans.
